The promise of a new life for her little brother Skeet had been Maddie's reason for making the long sea trip from London to Australia, to carry out the terms of her fathers will. But now she had arrived and was wondering if she had after all been wise to come. Before either she or Skeet could become the legal owners of the derelict station of Yattabilla in the middle of the outback they had to stay for a year - and as time went on Maddie was becoming less and less sure that she could make a go of it. Her neighbour, the forceful Steve Darley, was even more certain that she would not succeed - but then wasn't it in Steve's own interest that she should fail?
